History of HALT

HALT was set up in 1994 as a pilot demonstration project to provide practical legal help, support and advocacy to women experiencing domestic abuse from a man they know regarding their rights and choices in the criminal and civil court systems.  HALT was the first organisation in the UK to fulfil this unique and vital role which was not covered by any other service.

Since then HALT has continued to grow and develop, working with both women and men experiencing abuse from partners, ex-partners and family members.  In December 2011 HALT became part of the Leeds Domestic Violence Service (LDVS) consortium working in partnership with Leeds Women’s Aid and Behind Closed Doors.

HALT become a Leading Lights service fully accredited by SafeLives in 2014 demonstrating our commitment to excellence in service and support and ensuring our clients, funders and stakeholders are confident of the highest level of service.

HALT is a registered charity and is governed by a board of Trustees. HALT is a completely independent organisation.

Between April 2011 and March 2016 HALT have provided ongoing support and advice/information has been provided to over 3000 victims of domestic abuse and supported clients in 1700 criminal court proceedings, including more than 750 trials.
