Providing support to high risk victims of domestic abuse in Leeds to

reduce their risk of further harm.

Part of the Leeds Domestic Violence Service.

History of HALT

HALT was set up in 1994 as a pilot demonstration project to provide practical legal help, support and advocacy to women experiencing domestic abuse from a man they know regarding their rights and choices in the criminal and civil court systems.  HALT was the first organisation in the UK to fulfil this unique and vital role which was not covered by any other service.

Since then the service has continued to grow and develop, working with both women and men experiencing abuse from partners, ex-partners and family members.  In December 2011 HALT became part of the Leeds Domestic Violence Service (LDVS) consortium working in partnership with Leeds Women’s Aid and Behind Closed Doors. What is an IDVA

The role of an IDVA, or Independent Domestic Violence Advocate, is defined by SafeLives and it is to ‘address the safety of victims at high risk of harm from partners, ex-partners or other family members to secure their safety and the safety of their children’*.

IDVAs are specialist support workers who are legally trained to with victims of domestic abuse at high risk of serious harm from current or ex-partners or other family member(s).  They work from the point of crisis to assess the level of risk and address immediate safety issues.
